As part of the residency, Lorenzo developed Jugalbandi: a series that began as an ongoing dialogue between the artist and the artisans. In Hindi, “Jugalbandi” refers to a musical performance where two solo artists engage in a spontaneous, improvisational conversation, challenging and complementing each other at the same time. Similarly how in this project, Lorenzo’s visual research and composition in direct exchange with the weavers’ material knowledge and their cultural expression engaged. Lorenzo began by photographing everyday forms found in rural settings, objects, stacks, surfaces, and unplanned arrangements. Back in his studio, he translated these observations into graphic fragments, building layered compositions from them. These were never treated as closed designs. Instead, they functioned as a flexible visual score, open to adjustment as weaving progressed.
