In collaboration with the Lenskart Foundation, Jaipur Rugs Foundation (JRF) organizes
specialized eye check-up camps to address vision-related issues and improve the quality
of life in rural communities. Recognizing that poor vision limits education and livelihood
opportunities, the initiative focused on early detection and timely treatment. Qualified
optometrists conducted thorough eye examinations and distributed free power glasses
to those identified with refractive errors.
The camps also identified individuals needing advanced medical attention, referring cataract patients to JRF’s empanelled hospitals for
free surgeries, restoring sight and independence
The initiative strengthened access to eye care at the grassroots by building local capacity and extending services to underserved communities. Over 280 Drishti Didis were trained to conduct basic eye screenings, mobilise villagers, and raise awareness on eye health. Drishti Didis are empowered through structured training that equips them with the knowledge and skills to serve as the first point of contact for eye care within their communities. The training covers basic eye health, common vision problems, use of simple screening tools, and methods for identifying symptoms that require further medical attention. Drishti Didis are also trained in community mobilisation and awareness building, enabling them to effectively communicate the importance of regular eye check ups and early detection.
At the village level, Drishti Didis conduct initial eye screenings using standard vision charts and basic diagnostic tools. They help identify refractive errors and other visible eye conditions, maintain records, and guide individuals who need further examination to eye camps or referral centres. By providing these services locally, Drishti Didis reduce barriers to access, ensure timely identification of vision issues, and build trust within the community, playing a critical role in strengthening grassroots eye care delivery.
The programme reached 190 villages across 8 districts in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, positively impacting more than 2,80,000 people through screenings and community awareness activities.
Through these eye check ups, individuals requiring cataract surgery are identified during the screening process. Within a month, identified patients are mobilised and guided to assemble for scheduled cataract surgeries. Jaipur Rugs Foundation facilitates the entire process by arranging transportation and ensuring that the surgeries are provided free of cost.
This initiative is made possible through JRF’s partnerships with leading healthcare institutions, including BST Hospital Achrol, Mishri Devi Hospital, NIMS Chandwaji, Sahay Hospital Moti Dungri, and Shankara Hospital. Together, these collaborations ensure timely access to quality eye care for individuals from underserved communities.
Beyond the Classroom is an immersive learning programme that invites students to step outside academic spaces and engage directly with craft, culture, and community. In a time shaped by screens and digital distance, the programme offers a chance to learn through lived experience, observation, and meaningful exchange. By spending time with artisans, materials, and local community, students gain a deeper understanding of making, tradition, and the social worlds that shape the future of education.
