“How is any job meaningful unless done for the betterment of people?” asks Dolly Kumari, a community mobilizer from Deoghar branch Jaipur Rugs Foundation. A few years ago, her opinion held no value in front of her family. She would spend her days completing daily chores and shuttling to and from her institution. Her association with JRF started two years ago when a senior staff member Sanjay Singh happened to visit her academic institution. He was in search of a talented young mind to facilitate JRF in conducting various programmes around rural villages. Dolly wasted no time in approaching him and discussing how she could contribute to such interventions, the only barrier being – she knew absolutely nothing about carpets. Although that did not stop her, the determined heart took time out to learn everything there is to know about carpets, production and processes. The learning brought about an immense change in her personality. She had already started spreading word about JRF and how more women can earn a decent livelihood working from home. How would she contribute? Her biggest strength, as described by Sanjay Singh was to interact with people and create awareness and that’s what she does today. She is responsible for connecting with hundreds of women from her community as a grassroots leader and getting them together through mobilization. Her parents are proud to call themselves ‘her parents’, she admits with happiness. With a glimmer of contentment in her eyes, Dolly says, “If I had given up because of my weaknesses, I would not have been able to achieve what I wanted to”. When dreams and determination come together, the outcome is always a delightful reality.
