- Indian social entrepreneurs go global

Rajiv Tikoo Posted: Tuesday, Apr 13, 2010 at 2206 hrs IST:

New Delhi: Young social entrepreneurs from India are now making their mark globally. As many as five Indians figure in the list of 23 entrepreneurs selected for the global social benefit incubator (GSBI) enterprise-building programme at Santa Clara University, US. Most entrepreneurs are targeting customers at the base of the pyramid.

While a few entrepreneurs are harnessing renewables, others are making affordable devices for underserved markets. Rajnish Jain of Avani India supplies cooking gas extracted from pine needles to people in Uttarakhand at the same cost as subsidised LPG while Somnath Pyne of the Force for Rural Empowerment and Economic Development helps people cultivate Jatropha in areas adjacent to railway lines. Vivek Gupta of Saran Renewable Energy generates electricity from dhaincha, a plant grown in waterlogged land, with the help of a biomass gasification system.

While Anita Moura of Solar Ear employs physically-challenged people to make solar powered hearing aids, Devendra Shukla of Jaipur Rugs Foundation serves around 40,000 artisans in tribal areas by offering them integrated supply chain management services, including market linkages.

December 24, 2008: Management Guru Discusses 'Creative Capitalism'

C.K. Prahalad is a management thinker and author of the best-selling The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: I am very interested in opportunities that incorporate the poor at the bottom of the pyramid into the global supply chain, not just at the local level. For example, I am writing a case study of an Indian company called Jaipur Rugs. They receive wool from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, China and Argentina. It is then blended with wool from Rajasthan in India. 40,000 women in rural India create classical and contemporary handmade carpets that are then sold in the United States. This is the ultimate global supply chain, where the poor are woven into the supply chain. This is the democratization of commerce.

19th August, 2008: Potential at bottom of pyramid

According to Deutsche Bank, the volume of micro-finance loans hit $25 billion in 2007, up from $4 billion in 2001, with another $250 billion still needed. The bank expects private investors, drawn by the sector's social mission, stable returns, low default rates and potential as a diversification play, will be pouring $20 billion into micro-finance institutions in 2015 - ten times more than they did in 2006. "India has a vast experience in the area of micro-financing, which has contributed to the development of families belonging to low income groups," Bahrain's Minister for Social Development Fatima Al Balooshi says.
