Sustainability

Artisan Originals is set out to accomplish two very different but equally important types of sustainability. As the world becomes more populated and the supply of resources shrinks, we at Jaipur Rugs are determined to ensure that every centimeter of yarn is utilized. Artisan Originals uses whatever yarn is leftover from our more prevalent consumer-facing lines to craft these one-off pieces. The weavers are given complete freedom in terms of patterns, intricacy, inspiration, and time to completion. Due to the materials being leftover from other lines, the colors and textures provided to the artisans are as diverse as their designs. The second sustainability goal is to revive and maintain the centuries-old art of hand-knotting rugs in India. Through financial empowerment, proper training, and a constantly available support system, the art is kept alive for both present individuals and generations to come.

Project Error – Anthar rug

The Anthar rug is an outcome of a disagreement between the weavers who had hand-woven it. This resulted in a pattern on bottom of the rug which is not very aligned. As weavers kept weaving over next several months, they eventually worked in harmony resulting in a unified pattern in upper part of the rug. This hand-woven rug by weavers of Rajasthan illustrates a beautiful story of human connection and has won German Design Award, 2016 in Product Excellence Category.
