“Service
to the community” is Jaipur Rugs Company’s motto.
Child
labor is a common issue with the Indian Carpet and Rug
Industry. Historically, children in India have worked in
the carpet factories with their own families as a way of
getting to know the family apprenticeship. However,
under the increased export pressure since the mid 1970s,
child labor in the industry increased rapidly. The
increase in demand of carpets from international markets
led to recruitment of poor children in the trade. Even
today, children continue to work the looms, but behind
closed and guarded doors. Child labor is facts of life
say both factory-owners and parents of the children
working here.
However, since its inception 10 years back, Jaipur Rugs
Company has always produced some of the best carpets and
rugs using skilled weavers, without involving children.
We know that all weavers can not provide formal type of
education to their children as there are not enough
resources to provide schooling, as a result of which
most parents make their children to help them work in
factories or have odd jobs. We strictly discourage this.
We have taken several measures for the overall
Upliftment of the weavers and their families, which
include even children education. We always favor
compulsory basic education for all children as without
education the children are bound to do something or the
other which is not beneficial to them.
The company very well understands the importance of
child education in society. Every weaver working with us
is considered a family member and hence his growth is
important for us. We encourage our weavers to give their
children proper education. For this we provide them with
all the necessary facilities. With provisions of regular
work, better pay, proper working condition, health care
etc., we have never given any chance to our weavers to
complain or feel dissatisfied in their work. We make
them self sufficient in such a way that they can afford
a qualitative standard of living, can easily take care
of their families and provide basic education to the
children. We also allow womenfolk to work in our looms
so that they can also support the family. All kinds of
trainings are provided to our weavers so that they can
enhance their skills and thus earn more money thereby
providing their kids education and preventing child
labor.
we also have own non profit social organization, Jaipur
Rugs Foundation, to take proper care of the children and
weavers. We make it a point that all weavers working
with us must have their kids have basic education.
Education is very important, and no children should be
deprived of it.
